Whispering Slate, Sparse Gold – Julian Haart
On the steep banks of the Middle Moselle, where the ancient slate terraces stretch upwards towards the sun like an amphitheatre and the river, in majestic meanders through the green valley, a wine-growing tradition begins, dating back to the year 1337. In Piesport, where the Roman poet Ausonius sang the praises of the vineyards more than 1,600 years ago, Julian Haart tends his vines with dedication, care and enthusiasm.
The dawn of a new era came in 2010, when Julian Haart founded his own tiny winery,,together with his wife Nadine. Prior to this, he had learnt his craft from the very best – at Emrich-Schönleber on the Nahe, at Heymann-Löwenstein, at Egon Müller on the Saar and with his mentor Klaus-Peter Keller in Rheinhessen. Having learnt his craft from these masters, he forged his own unique path and became the quiet revolutionary of the Moselle.
On just five hectares of vineyards, which he and his wife tend entirely by hand, he produces wines of delicate elegance and austere mineral structure. The vines are rooted in the steepest slopes, in the legendary slate soils of the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and the Wintricher Ohligsberg. Some of the vines are over 100 years old and yield only a few grapes – yet every single one is a precious treasure.
Julian’s Rieslings mark a return to the classic Mosel wines, the likes of which are scarcely produced anymore. Like a lightsaber, the acidity lashes across the tongue, only to be immediately reined in by the finely integrated residual sugar. They are precise, mineral-driven and possess an almost weightless structure – wines that reveal the immense potential of the ancient slate terraces.
What Julian Haart creates here is more than just wine – it is a poem of slate dust, Moselle light and centuries-old craftsmanship. He is one of the few winemakers who have completely reimagined the world of German wine . His wines are rare and sought-after worldwide, and every sip tells of the undaunted spirit of the Moselle, of steep slopes and the unyielding will of a man who captures the essence of his terroir in every bottle. A living legacy that stands the test of time.
