Domaine Liger-Belair – The aristocracy of Burgundy

The Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is now regarded as one of Burgundy’s great, legendary estates, even though, as a winery in its current form, it is still relatively young. It was only founded in 2000 by Comte Louis-Michel Liger-Belair . However, the family’s roots in Burgundy stretch back well over two centuries: as early as 1815, General Louis Liger-Belair, who served under Napoleon, purchased the château in Vosne-Romanée, thereby laying the foundations for an impressive wine estate .

Over the following generations, the estate grew to an impressive size of over 60 hectares, including some of the most prestigious vineyards of the Côte de Nuits, such as the monopoles La Romanée, La Tâche and La Grande Rue . However, this immense legacy was lost in 1933 following an unfortunate dispute over the estate’s inheritance and was sold at auction. Only three vineyards – La Romanée, Les Reignots and Les Chaumes – could be bought back by the family and were subsequently leased out.

It was Louis-Michel Liger-Belair who, after completing his studies as an agricultural engineer and oenologist, had the vision to revive the family legacy . In 2000, he took over the management of the remaining plots and began to rebuild the estate bit by bit. Today, the domaine comprises a total of 8.7 hectares of vineyards, spread across the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Flagey-Échezeaux. Among its crown jewels, alongside its most famous holding, the Grand Cru monopoly La Romanée – the smallest AOC vineyard in France, covering just 0.84 hectares – also includes plots in the Grands Crus Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, as well as several Premier Cru vineyards.

Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, who was influenced by the legendary winemaker Henri Jayer， adopts a minimalist approach in the cellar: rigorous grape selection, gentle maceration and ageing in high-quality new oak barrels . His wines, made almost exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape variety, captivate with their elegant tannins, lively freshness and a deep mineral note. They are regarded as the epitome of classic Pinot Noir and are celebrated by connoisseurs as true jewels of Burgundy. Due to the tiny production volumes and the utmost artisanal care, they rank among the most sought-after and expensive wines in the world. The domaine adheres to biodynamic principles and even ploughs some of its vineyards with horses in order to bring out the best possible expression of the terroir .
