3. Historical background: Julian Haart

Julian Haart is regarded as one of the greatest talents on the German wine scene. He completed his training with two living legends: Egon Müller (Scharzhof) and Klaus-Peter Keller (Rheinhessen) . After returning to the Moselle, he began to acquire plots in the best locations.

The vineyard is deliberately kept small (approx. 4 hectares) and almost all the work is done by hand by Julian and his wife Nadine. Vinification is minimalist: natural fermentation, traditional basket press, ageing in Fuder (the traditional 1000-litre barrel of the Moselle) .

4. The vineyard: Piesporter Goldtröpfchen

The Goldtröpfchen("droplets of gold")vineyard is one of the best-known and best Grand Cru vineyards on the Moselle. The name is derived from the glitter of the slate rock in the sun.

  • Vine age: Julian Haart owns terraced vineyards here that were planted in the early 20th century. The vines for this Kabinett are over 75 years old .

  • Soil: Devonian slate, which provides the characteristic minerality and fine fruit.

5. 2019 vintage

The 2019 vintage on the Moselle was characterised by extremely low yields, which led to an exceptional concentration of the wines.

Julian Haart described the harvest itself as follows:

"I knew our 2019 yields would be much lower, but I have to admit I was shocked when I only received 250 litres after pressing - and from the same vines as in 2018, when it was 700 litres."

This low yield resulted in wines with high extract density and intense fruit, while retaining freshness. The harvest for the Goldtröpfchen Kabinett began on 17 September 2019

6. Critics' ratings

The 2019 Goldtröpfchen Kabinett received excellent reviews and is considered one of the best wines of its vintage.

  • Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com):

"Anything but a standard, playful little Kabinett! The licorice and tropical-flower character is married to very vibrant acidity and the merest hint of sweetness. Crystalline finish with great, lime-zest freshness."
    Rating: 95 points

  • Mosel Fine Wines:

"It offers a gorgeously complex nose of yellow peach, almond cream, pear, bergamot, a hint of apricot, and smoke. The wine proves superbly fruity and juicy on the creamy palate of a Spätlese and leaves the playful and refreshing side of Kabinett in the long, zesty, and pure finish."
    Rating: 93 points (Issue No. 71 )

7. Sensory description (according to critics)

  • Nose: Yellow peach, almond cream, pear, bergamot, apricot, smoke, exotic flowers .

  • Palate: Creamy texture with the fullness of a Spätlese, paired with the playful lightness of a Kabinett. Vibrant acidity, subtle residual sweetness.

  • Finish: Crystalline, long, with a refreshing citrus note (lime, passion fruit) .

8. Summary & drinking recommendation

The Julian Haart Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett 'Alte Reben' 2019is a modern classic from the Moselle. The extremely low yields resulted in a concentrated, almost late-harvest Kabinett with great mineral density.

  • Drinking maturity:Already accessible now, but has enormous ageing potential due to its high extract density and acid structure (forecast: until 2039) .

  • Serving recommendation:Serve chilled at 8-10 °C. Ideal with Asian cuisine, spicy dishes or as an accompanying soloist due to the fruit sugar.

  • Availability:Due to its cult status and rarity, this wine is difficult to obtain; prices are in the upper segment for German Kabinett wines.
