Château Lynch-Bages – The royal guardian of Pauillac

In the heart of the Médoc, where the mighty Gironde stretches its salty arms far inland and the gravelly hills of Pauillac rise like a stone amphitheatre towards the sun, stands one of the greatest estates in the Bordeaux region – Château Lynch-Bages. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when the Bages family gave the village its name. In 1749, Thomas Lynch, the son of an Irish exile, married the daughter of the landowner Pierre Drouillard, and the name Lynch became forever linked to the estate .

The Lynch family shaped the estate over several generations and led it to a remarkable period of prosperity. In 1855, during the famous classification of Bordeaux wines, Lynch-Bages was ranked as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé – an honour that to this day distinguishes the wine as one of the most sought-after in the Médoc. In the 20th century, the Cazes family took over the estate and, with unwavering dedication, guided it into the modern era. Jean-Michel Cazes, who took over the estate in 1973, is regarded as one of the great visionaries of the Bordeaux wine world. He modernised the winemaking process and cemented Lynch-Bages’ reputation as one of the region’s leading estates.

At the heart of this poetry lies the unique terroir – a mosaic of deep gravel soils, deposited by the Garonne over millennia, and a subsoil of limestone and clay, which gives the vines remarkable richness and structure. Across some 100 hectares of vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot unfold their timeless interplay. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, accounting for around 75 per cent, and lends the wine its architectural rigour, its fine tannins and the unmistakable aromas of cassis, cedar wood and a hint of smoke.

In the cellar, the quiet magic is perfected: the grapes are rigorously selected and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks before the wine matures for 18 months in new oak barrels. The finished wine is a masterpiece of balance – a symphony of power and elegance that caresses the palate with aromas of ripe cherries, truffles, graphite and a mineral note.
