Angelo Gaja Winery
1. History & Family
The GajaWinery is based in Barbaresco in the Italian region of Piedmont. It was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, who opened a tavern in his home village and served his own wines there. By the end of the 19th century, the business was already one of the region’s first bottlers.
The current owner, Angelo Gaja (born 1940), is the founder’s great-grandson. He took over the winery in 1961 at the age of just 21 and is now regarded as Italy’s most internationally renowned wine producer. His compatriots affectionately call him ‘Angelo nazionale’. Today, the business is run by the fifth generation of the family – his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni.
2. Viticulture & Innovations
Angelo Gaja brought about a lasting revolution in wine production in Piedmont:
Yield limitation: He was one of the first to rigorously reduce yields in order to improve quality.
International grape varieties: Despite resistance, he was the first winemaker in Piedmont to plant Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon on a significant scale .
Barrique ageing: He introduced ageing in small French barriques (225-litre oak barrels), whereas at the time only large, old wooden casks were traditionally used.
Single-vineyard wines: Following the Burgundian model, he was one of the first to produce Barbaresco wines from various single Nebbiolo vineyards such as Sori San Lorenzo, Sori Tildin and Costa Russi.
3. Vineyards & Estates
Today, the estate comprises around 100 hectares of vineyards in Piedmont. In addition, the Gaja family owns other top-class estates:

4. The wines
Gaja produces around 350,000 bottles a year. Among its best-known wines are:

5. Awards & Significance
Gaja’s wines are rankedalongside the world’s great classics such as Château Lafite-Rothschild and Krug. Angelo Gaja has repeatedly been named ‘Man of the Year’ by Decanter and Wine Spectator. In 2025, Gaja received the ‘Most Admired Wine Brand’ award for the second time and was ranked second among the world’s best wineries.
