Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte – From a winegrowers’ cooperative to a global brand

The Nicolas Feuillatte Champagne house is the youngest of the major Champagne brands and, at the same time, the region’s most significant cooperative. With over 5,000 winegrowers and a vineyard area of around 2,200 hectares, it brings together grapes from across the Champagne appellation and is now the best-selling Champagne brand in France and the third most important worldwide .

The house’s origins date back to 1972, when Henri Macquart founded the Centre Vinicole de la Champagne in Chouilly, at the foot of the Côte des Blancs. His aim was to guarantee winegrowers a market for their grapes following a period of overproduction and to create a shared storage and winemaking facility . The house is named after Nicolas Feuillatte, a charismatic businessman from Paris who had made his fortune importing coffee from the USA after the Second World War and who socialised with figures such as Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis. In 1976, he created a champagne under his own name for his circle of American friends .

In 1986, a decisive merger took place: Nicolas Feuillatte sold his brand to the Centre Vinicole de la Champagne, and the company henceforth operated under the name Centre Vinicole – Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte . The first milestone of a century came in 1995 with one million bottles sold; by 2014, this figure had already reached ten million . Today, the portfolio comprises two flagship cuvées: the non-vintage Brut and the prestige cuvée Palmes d’Or, which is produced as a vintage champagne in exceptional years and aged in the cellar for up to ten years .

The wines are characterised by a philosophy of balance, finesse and freshness. Cellar master Guillaume Roffiaen crafts the cuvées with the utmost precision and tailors each dosage precisely to the respective crus, grape varieties and vintages . The blend of grape varieties traditionally comprises Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, with the grapes vinified plot by plot to preserve the character of each terroir .
