Biondi Santi - Brief report

Foundation & significance: The Tuscan winery (founded in 1888) is considered the inventor of Brunello di Montalcino. Ferruccio Biondi Santi isolated the special Sangiovese clone and developed the slow ageing method in large wooden barrels.

The wines (Rosso, Brunello Annata, Brunello Riserva) are characterised by elegance, taut acidity, fine tannins and aromas of red fruits, herbs and earth. They often take years to develop and can mature for decades.

Legendary: The old Riserva vintages (e.g. 1955, 1964) are wine icons and fetch top prices at auctions.

Today: The French EPI Group has been the majority owner since 2016. Under the leadership of CEO Giampiero Bertolini and winemaker Federico Radi, the traditional style is being carefully modernised, with more accessibility for young people.

Speciality: The estate preserves a unique, old Sangiovese clone ("Biondi Santi biotype") in its historic vines in the "Il Greppo" district.

Conclusion: Biondi Santi is the historical reference for Brunello, a symbol of tradition, longevity and world-class Sangiovese characterised by its terroir.
