Dr von Bassermann Jordan

The Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan winery in Deidesheim in the Palatinate is one of Germany’s most prestigious and time-honoured wineries. It looks back on a history spanning over 300 years and has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) since 1910.

History and Pioneering Spirit

The estate’s roots date back to 1718, when Pierre Jordan, originally from Savoy , purchased his first vines in the Palatinate . However, it was his grandson, Andreas Jordan (1775–1848), who laid the foundations for the estate’s international reputation . He was a visionary pioneer of quality viticulture in the Palatinate. He was one of the first to introduce single-varietal planting of vineyards, separate harvesting and the vinification of individual vineyard sites – innovations that were revolutionary by the standards of the time.

Following Andreas Jordan’s death, the estate was divided amongst his children, giving rise tothe three famous estates : Bassermann-Jordan, Reichsrat von Buhl and von Winning. In 1883, the winery was given its current name when Andreas Jordan’s granddaughter and her husband, Emil Bassermann, took over the estate. The title ‘Geheimer Rat’ in the name dates back to Emil Bassermann, a banker who was awarded this honorary title.

Today, the winery is runby the Seeger family.

Vineyards and Philosophy

The winery cultivates around 50 hectares of vineyards, spread across more than 20 different single-vineyard sites in the municipalities ofDeidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg. A third of these areas are among the best sites in the Palatinate, including Hohenmorgen, Kirchenstück and Jesuitengarten. The soils are diverse, ranging from red sandstone, shell limestone and loess in Deidesheim to volcanic basalt in Forst.

The estate’s philosophy is to produceterroir-driven, mineral-rich wines that are sustainable and have good ageing potential. In harmony with nature, the estate avoids the use of mineral or synthetic fertilisers and focuses on natural, organic viticulture. The estate is EUorganic-certified.

Grape Varieties and Wines

The range is clearly dominated by Riesling, which accounts for around 85 per cent of the vineyard area . In addition, Burgundy varieties (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and other varieties are also cultivated.

The estate produces wines across all quality tiers – from estate wines and local wines right through to the VDP.GROSSEN GEWÄCHSEN® from the premier vineyards. A distinctive feature is the different labelling: The coat-of-arms label denotes wines with residual sweetness, whilst the Probus label stands for dry wines.
