Château Cheval Blanc - The poetry of Saint-Émilion

General information:
Château Cheval Blanc is one of the world's most famous wine estates and has been in the top "Premier Grand Cru Classé A" category in Saint-Émilion without interruption since 1955. It embodies a unique style that clearly sets it apart from many wines from its home appellation and builds a bridge to neighbouring Pomerol.

Location & soil:
The estate is located in the far north-west of the Saint-Émilion appellation, directly on the border with Pomerol. This location is crucial. The soils are a complex mosaic of three main types: deep gravel (as in Pauillac), sandy loam and clayey loam. This extraordinary geological diversity on just 45 hectares is the basis for the complexity of the wines.

Grape varieties & wine:
The unusual distribution of grape varieties is the trademark: around 52% Cabernet Franc and 43% Merlot, supplemented by 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The high proportion of old Cabernet Franc gives the wine its characteristic freshness, aromatic precision (cherry-red fruit, flowers, spices, often minty notes) and a silky texture.
The Grand Vin, Château Cheval Blanc, is known for its seductive, sensual elegance and apparent lightness combined with great concentration and longevity. It combines the aromatic finesse and freshness of Cabernet Franc with the richness of Merlot to create a harmonious, unmistakable whole. Compared to other great Saint-Émilions, it often appears less powerful and rich in extract, but all the more nuanced and "airy".

Specialities:

  • Petit Cheval: The excellent second wine, which can have a higher proportion of Merlot and reflects the style of the Grand Vin in a more accessible form.

  • A unique terroir: The location on the "Cheval Blanc" gravel bank (an old river bank) is geologically unique in Saint-Émilion.

  • Modern era:Since the takeover by Bernard Arnault (LVMH) and Baron Albert Frère in 1998, considerable investments have been made in the vineyard and cellar, further consolidating the already legendary quality.

  • Architecture: The spectacular, modern cellar building by architect Christian de Portzamparc is itself a landmark.

Conclusion:
Château Cheval Blanc stands for aristocratic finesse and uncompromising elegance. It is a wine of poetic beauty that demonstrates strength not through power, but through complexity, freshness and longevity. Its unmistakable profile, characterised by the unique terroir and the dominant position of Cabernet Franc, makes it one of the most fascinating and sought-after wines not only in Bordeaux, but in the world.
