G. H. Mumm’s Wine Estate
The G. H. von Mumm Winery in Johannisberg in the Rheingau looks back on a history spanning more than 200 years, a history full of ups and downs that is closely linked to the famous vineyards of Schloss Johannisberg. The foundation stone for the winery was laid by the enterprising wine merchant Gottlieb Mumm in 1811. At that time, he purchased the castle’s entire, as yet unharvested crop – a risky move that proved to be a stroke of luck, as the 1811 vintage went down in history as the legendary ‘Kornet vintage’. With around 60,000 litres of wine, Mumm did a splendid business. In 1822, he invested this capital in the purchase of vineyards, which form the foundation of today’s estate. In 1852, the estate was renamed ‘G. H. Mumm’ after Gottlieb’s son , Georg Hermann Mumm, and in 1873 the family was ennobled, a fact reflected in the later name ‘G. H. von Mumm’.
Today, the winery – which has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP)since 2012 – cultivates around 65 hectares of vineyards. 83 per cent of the vineyards are planted with Riesling and 12 per cent with Pinot Noir. The estate has traditionally been closely linked to the management of Schloss Johannisberg and boasts first-class vineyards such as the Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland, the Johannisberger Hölle and the Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck. These terroirs, with their slate- and quartzite-rich soils, lend the wines their distinctive minerality and fruitiness.
The estate’s wines combine delicate, variety-typical fruit with an enchanting interplay of sweetness and acidity, which is what makes Riesling from the Rheingau so special. The range extends from elegant Rieslings to powerful Spätburgunders, which are among the region’s most distinctive wines. To this day, the estate remains a living testament to the great winemaking tradition of the Rheingau and is co-managed by the Schloss Johannisberg Estate Administration, which consistently upholds its philosophy of quality .
