Domaine Etienne Sauzet is one of the most renowned addresses for white Burgundy. Located in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, the family winery is known above all for its elegant and precise Chardonnays from the commune of Puligny-Montrachet. As one of the top producers in the region, its white wines stand for the highest quality and authenticity.
📜 History
The roots of the estate go back to 1903, when Étienne Sauzet founded it. His final breakthrough came after his marriage in 1924 with the acquisition of additional vineyards. Under the management of Gérard Boudot, the husband of Sauzet's granddaughter Jeanine, the estate rose to the absolute top in the mid-1980s. With the aim of continuing the tradition, the fourth generation, consisting of Gérard's daughter Emilie Boudot and her husband Benoît Riffault, took over .
🍇 Vineyards & terroir
Today, the domaine cultivates around 15 hectares of vines, mainly in the municipalities of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet.
Grands Crus (4): The estate owns plots in the most prestigious sites, including Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. The Montrachet wine comes from the oldest vines (65 years old).
Premiers Crus (9): An impressive selection of sites that form the centrepiece of the range. These include Les Combettes (1 hectare with 50-year-old vines), Champ Canet (1 hectare, planted in 1959) and Les Folatières (0.27 hectares).
Site wines & Bourgogne Blanc: The domaine also produces local wines from Puligny-Montrachet as well as a regional Bourgogne Blanc.
The majority of the soils are calcareous clay, ideal for the Chardonnay grape.
🍷 Winemaking & quality philosophy
The products are the result of a precise symbiosis of traditional expertise and modern, environmentally friendly cultivation.
Organic & biodynamic cultivation: The winery has been cultivated organically (Ecocert) since 2006 and according to strict biodynamic principles since 2013.
Gentle processing: The grapes are harvested by hand and then very carefully sorted and pressed whole. Fermentation takes place spontaneously in large oak barrels.
Ageing: The wines mature for 12 months on the fine lees in wooden barrels, followed by a further 6 months of ageing in stainless steel tanks. The proportion of new barriques is moderate and ranges from 10% to a maximum of 35%, depending on the wine.
Négociant activity: A small proportion of the grapes (e.g. for the Montrachet) are bought in, whereby the strict quality standards of the house are maintained.
