Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one of the most traditional and renowned wine estates in the whole of Sauternes. Its roots go far back into history.

📜 History & special features

The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century, when it was built as part of a military fortress. The first known vineyards were planted in 1618 by the Peyraguey family. Over the following centuries, the estate changed hands several times, including the influential de Pichard family, who also owned the famous Château Lafite Rothschild in the 18th century.

The estate's heyday began when Pierre Lafaurie acquired the property in 1796. The current name "Lafaurie-Peyraguey" is attributed to him. Under his aegis, the wine gained an outstanding reputation and was namedPremier Grand Cru Classé of Sauternesin the official classification of 1855, where it took second place in the rankings.

Today, the vineyard, which is located on the heights of the village of Bommes right next to the legendary Château d'Yquem, is owned by Swiss entrepreneur Silvio Denz. He is also CEO of the renowned crystal manufacturer Lalique. Under his management, the château has been extensively renovated and the connection with Lalique is also visible: inspired by the art of the crystal house, some bottles of wine are labelled with exclusive engravings.

🌿 Viticulture & terroir

The 18-hectarevineyard stretches across the communes of Bommes, Sauternes, Fargues and Preignac and is characterised by an exceptional diversity of soils, mainly composed of gravel and clay. This geological diversity, combined with the microclimate typical of the region, which favours noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), gives the wines a unique aromatic complexity.

The vines are planted according to the classic cuvée of the region: mainly Sémillon (93%), supplemented by Sauvignon Blanc (6%) and Muscadelle (1%). The grapes are harvested with the utmost care in several elaborate passes, in which only the perfectly noble rotten berries are selected by hand.

🍷 The wines

The Grand Vin, a noble sweet Sauternes, is the centrepiece of the winery. Depending on the source, it matures for 18-24 months in barriques, some of which are renewed annually, and is produced in limited quantities. Its style is known for its remarkable balance, finesse and flavours of citrus fruits and acacia blossom.

In addition to the main wine, the estate produces other wines:

  • La Chapelle de Lafaurie-Peyraguey (second wine): A fruity, balanced and lively wine.

  • Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey - Grand vin blanc sec (dry white wine): A powerful, mineral and concentrated white wine.

  • Le Lys de Lafaurie-Peyraguey (second dry white wine): An aromatic, round and soft wine.
