Château Liot - A family affair on the Haut-Barsac plateau
Location & Classification: Château Liot is located on the Haut-Barsac plateau, a privileged site within the Sauternes appellation in Bordeaux. Its wine is marketed as both Sauternes and Barsac, depending on the market, which emphasises its close connection to this commune. Unlike many of the region's big names, it is not part of the famous 1855 classification, but is valued as a consistent and reliable estate that is categorised as an "unsung hero".
History & ownership: The estate has been owned by the David family for five generations, making it one of the most traditional family businesses in the region. It is currently managed by Jean-Gérard (Jerry) David, who is passing on the knowledge of winegrowing to the next generation, his son Jonathan and his wife Marie-Amélie. Sources indicate the size of the estate at 20 to 40 hectares, with the vines for Sauternes in the best locations.
Terroir & winemaking: What makes Château Liot special is its soil, a mixture of red earth and pebbles on a bed of limestone, which provides natural drainage. The proximity to the river Ciron favours the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which is essential for the sweetness and complexity of the wines. The grape varieties are typically made up of 80% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. The grapes are selectively harvested by hand in several passes. Vinification is traditional and the Grand Vin is aged for 9 to 12 months in a combination of barriques and stainless steel tanks.
Style & sustainability: Château Liot's wines are known for their harmony and elegance. Fresh notes of mirabelle plum and citrus fruit blend with the typical honey, passion fruit and candied apricots that characterise Sauternes. The wine is not overly sweet, but impresses with its balanced acidity, which also makes it an excellent aperitif. The winery is also a role model in terms of sustainability: it has been HVE-certified (High Environmental Value) since October 2020 and is committed to environmentally friendly viticulture
