The Dr Heger winery is one of the most renowned addresses for top wines from Baden and is internationally renowned for its wines full of character.
📜 History: from hobby to top winery
The foundations for success were laid in 1935 by country doctor Dr Max Heger, who was passionate about buying fallow plots of land in top locations. His son Wolfgang Heger was the second generation to lead the estate into the top group of German wineries. Today, the winery is run by the third generation, Joachim Heger, a trained oenologist, and his wife Silvia, who together continue to develop the philosophy of the estate.
🌄 Location and terroir: the warmest place in Germany
The winery is located in the idyllic wine village of Ihringen in the southern Kaiserstuhl, the warmest place in Germany. The terroir is characterised by volcanic weathered soils with loess or loess-loam layers. The most famous sites are probably
Ihringer Winklerberg: an extremely steep, hot and stony south-facing site that is considered one of the world's most famous vineyards.
Achkarrer Schlossberg: also a steep terrain site with volcanic rock and ideal sun exposure.
🍷 Wine-growing philosophy: authentic and characterised by terroir
The winery pursues a clear philosophy that emphasises authenticity and sustainability. 98 per cent of the wines are consistently vinified dry. The focus is on the Burgundy varieties typical of the region: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc as well as Riesling, Chardonnay, Silvaner and Muscat.
The work in the vineyard is carried out in a natural way with organic fertilisation and targeted sowing. The grapes are harvested by hand and processed gently, with some of the ageing taking place in barriques.
🏆 Well-known wines and recognition
The Dr Heger winery has been a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) since 1986 and produces all quality levels from VDP Ortswein to VDP GROSSES GEWÄCHS (GG). The best-known wines include:
"Mimus" Pinot Noir Erste Lage Ihringer Winklerberg: This wine is a tribute to the father Wolfgang Heger.
"Pferd Willi" Silvaner: A distinctive Silvaner from 40-year-old vines that are cultivated with the help of a cold-blooded horse.
Grosse Gewächse: The wines from the "Winklerberg Wanne Häusleboden" or Achkarrer Schlossberg parcels are always among Germany's top class.
The outstanding quality is regularly confirmed by the specialised press. The winery has already been named "Winemaker of the Year" and receives the highest ratings for its wines.
The winery masterfully combines tradition and modernity to create wines of great clarity and character that unmistakably reflect their volcanic origins in the Kaiserstuhl.
