Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande – Pauillac’s elegant gem with a feminine soul

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande ranks among the most renowned estates in the Médoc and is one of the few estates to have been awarded the status of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate is situated in the Pauillac appellation, immediately south of Château Latour, and produces red wines of exceptional elegance and ageing potential.

The history of the estate dates back to 1689, when Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan, the father of Pierre de Rauzan and steward of Château Latour, acquired the property. In 1850, the domaine was divided into two parts : Pichon Longueville Baron and Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The name ‘Comtesse de Lalande’ derives from Virginie de Pichon Longueville, who brought the estate into the marriage following her marriage to the Comte de Lalande . The château was later run by the de Lencquesaing family, who acquired it in 1978 and managed it until 2007, when it was sold to the Rouzaud champagne dynasty (Louis Roederer).

The estate’s terroir comprises around 89 hectares of vineyards, situated on deep gravel soils overlying clay and limestone. The blend of grape varieties is remarkable: around 60 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 28 per cent Merlot, 8 per cent Petit Verdot and 4 per cent Cabernet Franc. This unusually high proportion of Merlot lends the wines their characteristic richness and velvety texture. A particular point of distinction is the Les Grands Champs plot, which is located within the Saint-Julien appellation – a unique feature for a winery in Pauillac.

In the cellar, the estate prioritises the utmost precision: the grapes are rigorously sorted, and fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The Grand Vin is aged for 18 months in French barriques, around 60 per cent of which are new. The result is a wine of great finesse and aromatic complexity: notes of black currants, violets, cedarwood and delicate spices characterise the bouquet, whilst on the palate, silky tannins and remarkable freshness delight.

Pichon Comtesse is regarded as the ‘most feminine’ wine from Pauillac – its elegance and the richness of the Merlot make it one of the most accessible great wines of the Médoc. It ranks among the finest and most consistent wines of Bordeaux and is prized by collectors worldwide. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is the elegant jewel of Pauillac, each bottle preserving the unmistakable soul of one of the greatest terroirs in Bordeaux.
