🍷 Brief report: Schlossgut Diel

Schlossgut Dielat Burg Layen is one of the most prominent and traditional wineries on the Nahe. It combines a centuries-old family history with the modern, creative art of winemaking at a top international level.

📜 History & location

The winery is located in Burg Layen in the district of Burg Layen-Rümmelsheim. The Diel family has been growing wine in the Nahe valley since the 16th century.

  • The acquisition: In 1802, during the Napoleonic occupation, Johann Peter Diel acquired the castle and the associated land from Baron von Dalberg, thus establishing the current family business in the direct line.

  • Modern era: The estate has always been at the forefront of the region, but it underwent a decisive development from the 1990s onwards under the 32-year management of Armin Diel. He focussed on the classic Riesling and Burgundy grape varieties, a move that is still influential today. Since 2019, the winery has been run by his daughter Caroline Diel and her husband Sylvain in the seventh generation.

🍇 Vineyards, grape varieties & philosophy

The winery cultivates around 25 hectares of vineyards in the best locations around Dorsheim and Burg Layen, including Goldloch, Pittermännchen and Burgberg.

  • Grape varieties: The focus is clearly on the "queen" Riesling with 70% of the area. In addition, around 10% each of PinotGris and Pinot Blanc, as well as Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Früh are cultivated.

  • Diverse soils: The high quality of the wines is closely linked to the unique soils. Slate, quartzite, gravel, loess and primary rock from the Rotliegend characterise the wines with mineral depth and aromatic clarity.

  • Philosophy: Caroline Diel describes her intuitive, artisanal approach with the words: "There is no recipe - I do everything the way it feels right at the moment". This credo is reflected in the entire range of her elegant and characterful wines. The winery is also a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates).
