Domaine Dujac – The perfection of the Burgundian terroir
In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the ancient slopes of Morey-Saint-Denis gently slope towards sun and the scent of Pinot Noir fills the crisp Burgundian air, lies a vineyard whose history is young yet deeply rooted in the soil of the terroir – Domaine Dujac. Founded in 1967 by Jacques Seysses, a man who swapped his dreary existence in banking for the exciting life of a winegrower, this journey began with the acquisition of Domaine Graillet. From just five and a half hectares of vineyards and the clever name ‘Dujac’ – an affectionate shortening of ‘du Jacques’ – a legacy grew that is now counted amongst Burgundy’s most dazzling jewels.
Jacques’ philosophy was simple and ingenious from the very start: the greatest influence on the wine should come from the vineyards themselves. Together with his wife Rosalind, who came from California to help with the harvest and stayed for good, he introducedthe principles of ‘lutte raisonnée’ from 1987 onwards , before the estate achieved full organic certification in 2011. The estate’s vineyards, including prestigious Grand Crus such as Chambertin, Clos de la Roche and Bonnes Mares, provide the precious raw material – grapes of the deepest concentration, imbued with the limestone-rich terroir.
In the cellar, the quiet magic is perfected: the fermentation of whole bunches – a hallmark of the estate – in wooden vats and the gentle ageing in oak barrels give rise to wines of refined elegance and enchanting finesse. The Pinot Noir red wines, with their aromas of red and black fruits, spices and floral notes, are just as sought-after as the white Chardonnay creations with hints of citrus and minerality. The old vines, the ‘Vieilles Vignes’,in particular , produce wines of unforgettable depth and a structure that, even after decades, lose none of their youthful vigour.
Today, Jacques’s sons Jeremy and Alec, supported by Jeremy’s wife Diana, are the second generation to carry on the legacy. They cherish their father’s legacy with the same dedication, whilst never losing sight of innovation. The Domaine Dujac is more than a vineyard – it is a living poem of dedication, soil and time, a silent giant that captures the incomparable poetry of Burgundy in every bottle. A wine of timeless elegance that embodies the soul of the vines, the light of Burgundy and the endless patience of a family – a masterpiece that lingers in the memory long after the last sip.
