Egon Müller Winery – The pinnacle of Mosel Riesling

The Egon Müller – Scharzhof Winery in Wiltingen on the Saar is far more than just a family business – it is a legend and a piece of German cultural heritage. Its roots stretch back to the late 18th century, when the Benedictine Abbey of St Maria ad Martyres in Trier cultivated the vineyards . Following secularisation, the Müller family acquired the estate in 1797, and it has remained in the family’s possession ever since. Today, the estate is managed by Egon Müller IV, the seventh generation of the family, with tireless dedication to perfection.

At the heart of the estate lies the famous Scharzhofberg, a VDP.Große Lage, regarded as one of the finest vineyards in the world. The steep, south-facing slope consists of Devonian slate, which, together with the cool Saar climate, lends the wines an unmistakable minerality, cool precision and a perfect balance between acidity and fruit. Across a vineyard area of around 12.3 hectares, spread across plots on the Scharzhofberg and in the Wiltingen ‘Braune Kupp’, 100 per cent Riesling is grown. Some of the old, ungrafted vines are over 100 years old and produce extremely concentrated grapes.

The estate’s purist philosophy is consistently upheld in the cellar. Here, you will search in vain for modern technology. Instead, the entire vinification process is carried out with the utmost care and deliberation in traditional wooden barrels, which are repaired more often than replaced. This gentle, natural vinification is the secret behind the exceptional wines, which are regarded as the finest, most noble and most famous in Germany.

The range extends from crystal-clear, mineral-driven estate wines through powerful Spätlese and Auslese to the legendary Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese. These iconic wines, which regularly rank amongst the world’s most expensive, are sold exclusively at auction – there is no direct-from-the-estate sales scheme . With wines of breathtaking finesse and virtually infinite ageing potential, Egon Müller – Scharzhof has secured an immortal place in the pantheon of international viticulture.
