Rémy Martin Cognac – The essence of French craftsmanship
In the heart of the French Charente region, in the town of Cognac, lies the House of Rémy Martin – a name that has stood for the finest art of cognac production for three centuries. The company was founded in 1724 by the young winemaker Rémy Martin. As early as 1738, King Louis XV honoured the master distiller for his exceptional brandy with a rare privilege: He granted him the right to plant new vines, despite an existing ban. This laid the foundation for one of the world’s most successful spirits brands.
However, the house’s true heyday began in the 1920s, when André Renaud took over the company and restructured it from the ground up. He brought with him not only his wife’s fortune from the Frapin family but, above all, an unerring instinct for blending. Renaud made the blending of spirits from the region’s two finest terroirs – Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne – the hallmark of Rémy Martin. In 1927, he launched the Rémy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac, which was an instant success. To this day, Rémy Martin remains the only major cognac house to specialise exclusively in Fine Champagne.
The distinctive style of Rémy Martin cognacs is the result of uncompromising craftsmanship. The grapes come from the chalk-rich soils of the Champagne crus, which give the distillates exceptional ageing potential. Double distillation in small copper stills, the traditional method of distillation on the lees, and long ageing in large-pored oak casks define the characteristic, harmonious flavour. The logo, a centaur with a bow and arrow, has adorned the bottles since 1870 and has become a global symbol of the French way of life and indulgence .
The house’s range includes, alongside the legendary VSOP, the XO Excellence, the 1738 Accord Royal and the extravagant Tercet. The crowning glory is Louis XIII, a rarity composed of up to 1,200 different distillates, some dating back decades. Rémy Martin has been part of the Rémy Cointreau Group since 1990, yet the founder’s philosophy lives on undiminished: to capture the heart of cognac – and to make it tangible in every bottle.
