Patriarche Père et Fils – The venerable sound of Burgundy’s greatest cellars

Deep beneath the winding streets of the medieval town of Beaune, where history breathes in every stone, lies an underground labyrinth that is unrivalled – the cellars of Patriarche Père et Fils. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where over two million bottles mature in the darkness , awaiting the moment when they will reveal their centuries-old history. The name Patriarche sounds like an echo from Burgundy’s heyday, a promise of enduring quality and regal elegance.

The roots of this venerable house stretch back to 1780, when the visionary Jean-Baptiste Patriarche founded the trading house in Beaune that still bears his name today. With bold entrepreneurial spirit, on 23 August 1796 he acquired the former convent of the Visitandines, a sacred place which, with its vaulted galleries, proved to be the ideal location for his wine business. From here, he exported the fine wines of Burgundy to Great Britain, the Netherlands and Belgium – and laid the foundation for a trading house which, with 240 years of tradition, ranks among the oldest in the region.

Yet the secret of Patriarche lies not only in its history, but also in its legendary cellars. After the Second World War, André Boisseaux, a visionary marketing genius, acquired around 35 neighbouring vaulted cellars and linked them together to form an underground empire that now stretches for five kilometres. This labyrinth of vaulted passageways, which was built between the 13th and 19th centuries, houses more than two million bottles and is Burgundy’s largest wine cellar. Here lie treasures dating back as far as 1904.

Today, Patriarche is more than just a winery – it is an institution, a living monument to Burgundian wine culture, which, through its cuvées and its unique expertise, preserves the voice of one of the oldest terroirs in the world.
