Château l'Église-Clinet, Pomerol

General information:

Château l'Église-Clinet is one of the most prestigious and sought-after wine estates in Pomerol. Although it is not officially classified, its exceptional quality and concentration make it one of the absolute world leaders in the appellation. The small, family-run estate (approx. 5.5 hectares) achieved legendary statusunder the charismatic and perfectionist winemaker Denis Durantou (1983-2020). His death marked the end of an era, but the estate is still run by his family.

Location & soil:

The vineyard parcels are located on the central Pomerol plateau in the immediate vicinity of icons such as Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The soil consists of the classic blue-grey clay ("argile bleue") over an iron-rich crust ("crasse de fer"), which provides depth, minerality and great ageing potential.

Grape varieties & wine:

The grape variety distribution is approximately 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The wines are made from extremely old vines (some over 80 years old).
The Grand Vin, Château l'Église-Clinet, is a monumental wine of rare density, complexity and longevity. It combines the earthy depth and powerful fruit of the great Merlot with the fresh structure and aromatic sophisticationof Cabernet Franc. Flavours of ripe black fruits, truffles, liquorice, chocolate and underground notes are typical. Despite its enormous concentration and tannin structure, it always retains a lively acidity and freshness. It needs at least 10-15 years of bottle ageing to open up and has enormous development potential over decades.

Specialities:

  • Cult status & rarity: The tiny production quantity (approx. 1,500 cases/year) and the excellent reputation make the wine an extremely sought-after and expensive collector's item.

  • Tradition & innovation:Durantou was a purist, but also made targeted use of modern technology. A trademark is the partial vinification and ageing in large clay amphorae, which emphasises the purity of the fruit.

  • The second wine: La Petite Église offers a more accessible, earlier drinkable insight into the terroir.

  • New era: Denis Durantou's daughters have been running the estate since 2020 with the declared aim of continuing his legacy and philosophy.

Conclusion:

Château l'Église-Clinet is a titan among the wines of Pomerol. It represents the perfect synthesis of the opulent power of the terroir and the disciplined, finesse-rich signature of its creator. The wine is powerful without being clumsy, complex without being blurred and with a timeless depth that makes it one of the longest-lived and most impressive growths of the Right Bank. It is a wine for connoisseurs and collectors that has transformed the myth of the "vin de garage" into its purest and most perfect form.
