📜 History & special features
The roots of the winery date back to 1580. It is named after Léonard de Suduiraut, whose marriage to Nicole d'Allard laid the foundations for today's estate. The estate's final breakthrough came with its official classification in 1855, when it was honoured as a "Premier Cru Classé". The château, now in Flemish style, was built in the 17th century and its gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre, Louis XIV's famous gardener.
Since 1992, Château Suduiraut has been owned by the renowned AXA Millésimes, which also manages the neighbouring Château Pichon Longueville Barons . A special historical detail is the former designation as "Cru du Roy" which can be found on old labels.
🌿 Viticulture & terroir
With 91 hectares of vines, Château Suduiraut is one of the largest wine estates in the appellation.
Location & soils: The vineyards are planted on gravelly, sandy-clayey soils (Graves). This special composition, combined with the autumn mists of the Ciron and Garonne rivers, creates the ideal microclimate for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea).
Grape varieties: The estate is classically planted with 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc (the official website also states a small proportion of 5% Sauvignon Gris ). The old vines (average age approx. 35 years) and a high planting density of 7,000 vines per hectare ensure low yields and high concentration. The winery is also certified for its environmental commitment (HVE).
🍇 The wines
The centrepiece of the estate is the Grand Vin, a noble sweet Sauternes. It matures for 18 to 24 monthsin French barriques (50% of which are new) and impresses with aromas of honey, apricot, candied citrus fruits and a lively acidity that perfectly balances the sweetness .
