Château Suduiraut – The great Sauternes estate with a royal history

Château Suduiraut is one of the most important estates in the Sauternes appellation and is classified in the first category (Premier Cru Classé) of the famous 1855 Bordeaux classification. The estate is situated in the village of Preignac, right next to the legendary Château d’Yquem, and comprises around 92 hectares of vineyards – one of the largest contiguous vineyard areas in the region.

The estate’s history dates back to 1580, when Nicole d’Allard married the feudal lord Léonard de Suduiraut and brought the château into the marriage as part of her dowry. The estate’s magnificent gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre, the famous court gardener to Louis XIV. In the 17th century, the château was burnt down during the Fronde uprisings, but was later rebuilt. In 1855, Château Suduiraut was officially classified as a Premier Cru Classé and has since been regarded as one of the world’s finest sweet wine estates.

The terroir at Suduiraut is ideal for the production of noble sweet wines: the sandy-clay gravel soils force the vines to develop deep roots, whilst the proximity to the Garonne and Ciron rivers ensures the crucial formation of mist. These morning mists favour the growth of the noble rot Botrytis cinerea, which concentrates the grapes and imparts their characteristic sweetness and complexity . The vineyard is planted with 90 per cent Sémillon and 10 per cent Sauvignon Blanc, with the grapes harvested in several selective hand-picks.

The winemaking process is carried out with the utmost precision: the grapes are gently pressed, and the must is fermented in barriques. Ageing lasts 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, a third of which are new. Suduiraut’s wines are characterised by exceptional concentration, great finesse and enormous ageing potential. They unfold aromas of candied fruit, honey, apricots and delicate spices.

Since 1992, Château Suduiraut has been part of the AXA Millésimes insurance group and is managed by Christian Seely. The estate is renowned for its consistently high quality and is regarded as one of the finest houses in Sauternes. The wines are prized by collectors worldwide. Château Suduiraut is the golden jewel of the Garonne, a masterpiece of botrytis, with every bottle preserving the essence of one of Bordeaux’s finest terroirs.
