The Friedrich Becker winery in Schweigen, in the southern Palatinate, is one of Germany’s great Pinot Noir icons. It is run by the Becker family and is a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP).
History and Pioneering Spirit
The history of the winery is inextricably linkedto Friedrich “Fritz” Becker Sr. (1948–2025). When he took over his family’s mixed farming business in 1973, he brought about a radical change: He left the winegrowers’ co-operative and from then on concentrated entirely on viticulture. Inspired by a visit to the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy in 1968, he set himself the goal of producing world-class Pinot Noir – an endeavour in which he ultimately succeeded.
Today, the estate is runby his son , Friedrich Becker Jr., who is responsible for the winemaking.
Terroir and Philosophy
The winery is a true ‘border-crosser’: some of its most famous vineyards , such as the Kammerberg and St. Paul, are not located in Germany but in neighbouring Alsace in France – which leads to distinctive designations such as ‘KB’ for the Kammerberg.
The soils are characterised by Muschelkalk and limestone, which lend the wines an exceptional mineral clarity and precision.
The estate’s philosophy is based on the conviction that great wines are made in the vineyard. Consequently, viticulture is carried out in harmony with nature, with a focus on strict yield reduction and manual labour. In the cellar, this is followed by gentle winemaking with spontaneous fermentation and long ageing in barriques.
Top wines and awards
The estate is particularly renowned for its Pinot Noir, which captivates with its richness, aromatic depth and great elegance. Among the flagship wines are the VDP.GROSSEN GEWÄCHSE® from the Kammerberg (“KB”) and St. Paul vineyards . The white wines (particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc) are also of the highest standard.
This outstanding quality is reflected in numerous awards: the winery was awarded 4 out of 5 grapes in the Gault-Millau Wine Guide, was named“Winery of the Year 2012” by the Schlemmer Atlas, and produced Germany’s Red Wine of the Year seven times in a row. With 97 out of 100 points, Becker was also the first red wine ever to receive such a high rating from Gault-Millau.
In summary ,the Friedrich Becker Winery is a world-renowned top-class estate, which, through uncompromising quality and a unique border location, has raised German Pinot Noir to the highest international standard .
