Domaine René Bouvier: Three generations of Burgundian winemaking excellence
Domaine René Bouvier is one of the most distinguished family-run estates in the Côte de Nuits and looks back on a history spanning over a century. The estate was founded in 1910 by Henri Bouvier in Marsannay. His son René took over the management in the 1950s and steadily expanded the estate through the purchase and leasing of vineyards, bringing the total to 12 hectares by 1991. In 1992,Bernard Bouvier – who had already produced his first vintage in 1986 –took over the domaine and has been running it ever since with a strong commitment to craftsmanship.
Today, the estate cultivates 30 hectares of vineyards exclusively in the Côte de Nuits, divided into 23 hectares of red wine and 7 hectares of white wine. The domaine is based in Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyards stretch from the historic terroirs near Dijon to Vosne-Romanée, with a focus on the Marsannay, Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin appellations . The old vines are a particular asset: the iconic ‘Racine du Temps’ cuvée comes from plots planted as early as 1922, which are now around 90 years old. The chalky and loamy soils lend the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay their distinctive character.
Since 2009, Bernard Bouvier has been committed to environmentally friendly viticulture and was awarded organic certification in 2013. In the cellar , the grapes are harvested entirely by hand into small 20-kg crates, followed by rigorous selection and gentle gravity-fed fermentation. The range comprises 26 different wines, from Bourgogne to the Grands Crus Charmes-Chambertin and Echezeaux.
The quality of this work is regularly recognised by the leading wine guides: the estate was awarded two stars in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2026 (RVF) and four stars in Bettane + Desseauve 2026. Bernard Bouvier was also named ‘Winemaker of the Year 2022’ by Bourgogne Aujourd’hui. The Domaine René Bouvier is thus now one of the most sought-after and highly regarded estates in Burgundy.
