🍷 Brief report: Paul Anheuser winery
The Paul Anheuserwinery in Bad Kreuznachis living proof that the Anheuser family's roots are firmly anchored in Nahe viticulture and at the same time remain linkedto the global success of Anheuser-Busch.
📜 History & location
The family's winemaking tradition dates backto 1627 and the winery is now in its 14th generation of family ownership. The estate can be found at Stromberger Straße 17, 55545 Bad Kreuznach.
Pioneering spirit: In 1842, two brothers of the 10th generation emigrated to America, where one of them, Eberhard Anheuser, founded the Anheuser-Busch brewing company . However, his nephew Rudolf Anheuser returned and became one of the most important winegrowing pioneers on the Nahe, expanding the business to its current size, introducing bottling and planting vineyards in the "pure set" - a pioneering achievement that significantly improved quality.
The more recent history: After the winery was taken over by Rudolf P. Anheuser in 1969 in the 13th generation, his sons, brothers Paul Christian and Rudolf Karl Ludwig Anheuser, bought the business out of their father's insolvency in 2004 and have been running it since then in the 14th generation. The winery went through insolvency proceedings again in 2019, but the business continued to operate and the family endeavoured to preserve the property.
🍇 Vineyards, grape varieties & philosophy
Today, the winery cultivates around 45 to 55 hectares of vineyards, spread across some of the most renowned sites in the Nahe region - including Altenbamberg, Monzingen, Niederhausen, Norheim, Schloßböckelheim and Roxheim .
Grape varieties & style: The focus is clearly on the "queen" Riesling, which accounts for around 70% of the planted area. The portfolio includes a wide range of white, red and rosé wines as well as sparkling wine. The philosophy combines deep tradition with modern, sustainable thinking. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature, with manual labour and strict grape selection. In the cellar, the focus is on gentle ageing and cool, temperature-controlled fermentation in order to preserve the fine fruit flavours and precise minerality.
🌟 Specialities & service
International recognition: The wines are highly recognised both nationally and internationally. The Rieslings from the famous single vineyard sites such as Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl or Schlossböckelheimer Königsfels are particularly well known .
Guest service: Visitors are welcome to taste the wines in the winery 's vinothequeand learn more about its long history. The winery opens its doors during the summer months at fixed times and by appointment.
The Paul Anheuser winery is thus the centrepiece of the family's wine tradition and a living chapter in the recent economic history of the Nahe region.
