Domaine Jacques Prieur – The essence of Burgundy in a bottle
The Domaine Jacques Prieur is one of Burgundy’s most significant and versatile estates. Its history began in 1868, when the wine merchant Claude Duvergey and Marie Taboureau, the daughter of a winegrower, married and laid the foundations for a winery that, over the following decades, was to develop into a veritable treasure trove of the finest vineyards . With far-sighted vision, Duvergey acquired plots in the region’s most famous vineyards – in Clos de Vougeot in 1889, in Montrachet in 1892, and in Chambertin and Musigny in 1895. When phylloxera devastated the vineyards, he defied the catastrophe with his visionary use of American rootstock, thereby preserving the legacy for future generations.
Today, the domaine is run by the Labruyère family. At the helm is the oenologist Edouard Labruyère, supported by the legendary cellar master Nadine Gublin, who has been shaping the wines since 1990 and was named Winemaker of the Year. The Domaine’s terroir portfolio is unique in Burgundy: across 21 hectares of vineyards, comprising 11 hectares of Pinot Noir and 10 hectares of Chardonnay, the Domaine owns parcels in almost all the major Grands Crus – from Montrachet to Clos Vougeot, Musigny and Chambertin. Added to these are 14 Premier Crus as well as the Meursault monopoly, Clos de Mazeray.
In the cellar, Nadine Gublin relies on traditional craftsmanship: the grapes are gently pressed; the Pinot Noir matures in open wooden vats, whilst the Grands Crus are aged in 50 to 80 per cent new barriques. The result is full-bodied, elegant wines with enormous ageing potential, which perfectly reflect the minerality and finesse of their terroir.
Domaine Jacques Prieur is the only estate in Burgundy to own plots in all five major Grands Crus of the Côte d’Or. This exceptional diversity makes the estate an essential destination for anyone wishing to experience the full breadth and depth of the Burgundian terroir .
