📜 History & tradition
The roots of the winery go back a long way. The estate was originally a monastery property of Himmerod Abbey and was first mentioned as early as 1254. The Kilburg family has been involved in winegrowing since 1465, making it one of the oldest winegrowing families on the Moselle. Today, the winery is run by Max Kilburg, the 20th generation of theKilburg family .
👨🌾 Generation change & vision
After studying viticulture in Geisenheim and completing internships in South Africa, the USA and Australia, Max Kilburg returned to his parents' business. This initially led to a classic generational conflict, as Max wanted to take a new, more natural path, while his father favoured traditional, conventional farming methods.
His philosophy is to produce wine as naturally as possible with minimal intervention. He favours spontaneous fermentation, long yeast storage and a gentle approach to nature. This uncompromising approach has earned him the reputation of a "young savage" on the Moselle among experts and is now also fully supported by his family.
🍇 Vineyards & wine philosophy
The vineyards of the winery are among the best sites in the region. The vines stand on extremely steep slate slopes and are worked by hand due to their steepness. The most important sites are:
Wintricher Ohligsberg: Max Kilburg's home vineyard, which lies directly behind the winery.
Piesporter Goldtröpfchen: A famous vineyard whose name stands for wines of the highest quality.
Wintricher Großer Herrgott & Wintricher Geierslay: Further sites that complement the portfolio.
The portfolio includes a wide range of wines. The focus is on Rieslings in various flavours from dry to feinherb to noble sweet Kabinett and Spätlese. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and red wines such as Pinot Noir are also produced.
🏆 Wines & awards
Despite the small size of the business - Max Kilburg himself only cultivates around 3 hectares of his own vineyards - he has already achieved considerable success:
The wines are described as crystal clear, precise and of great elegance and enjoy great popularity among critics and connoisseurs.
The Wintricher Ohligsberg Riesling Kabinett 2024 was awarded the highest rating of 10/10 points by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The Mosel Fine Winesindustry service described its Kabinett wines as "firm, precise, racy and extremely profound".
