Privy Councillor J. Wegeler – The bold sound of the noble gentleman

Where the Rhine traces its proudest bends and the sun bathes the slate-covered slopes of the Rheingau in golden light, stands a winery whose name resonates like an echo from the Wilhelmine era: Privy Councillor J. Wegeler. It is the name of a gentleman who bottled not only wine, but history – a bold legacy that to this day breathes life into the world of fine wines.

The roots of this estate stretch back to 1861, when Julius Wegeler, a bold spirit and wine merchant, married the daughter of the famous sparkling wine pioneer Deinhard. It marked the beginning of a dynasty. In 1882, he took the decisive step of acquiring his own estate in the heart of the Rheingau. Shortly afterwards, at the turn of the century, another milestone followed: he established the estate house in Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle – a union of two of Germany’s finest terroirs, which to this day form the heart of the estate. Today, the vineyard covers around 60 hectares, spread across the great vineyards of both regions, including Germany’s legendary and most expensive vineyard, the Bernkasteler Doctor.

The estate’s philosophy is as clear as the Riesling that reaches its peak here: ‘Absolute top quality’. Through uncompromising hand-picking and gentle processing, grapes are transformed into wines of timeless elegance. The crowning glory of this art is the ‘Geheimrat J.’ – Germany’s first dry premium branded wine. A wine that was served at state banquets at Bellevue Palace for the Queen of the Netherlands and has long since become a symbol of German Riesling culture.

Today, this legacy is upheld by the Wegeler family and the fourth-generation owners, Ralf Frenzel and Torsten Vogt. They combine a reverence for tradition with the courage to innovate – thereby creating wines that carry the spirit of the great Julius Wegeler into the future.
