3. Historical background: Julian Haart

Julian Haart is regarded as one of the greatest talents on the German wine scene.

The winery is deliberately kept small. The winemaking is minimalist: natural fermentation, traditional basket press, ageing in Fuder (the traditional 1000-litre barrel of the Moselle) .

4. The site: Wintricher Ohligsberg

The Ohligsberg is one of the most prestigious sites on the Middle Moselle and is classified as a Grand Cru.

  • First parcel purchase: The Ohligsberg was the first vineyard parcel that Julian Haart acquired after his return to the Moselle .

  • Vine age: The vines in this parcel are over 100 years old (planted in the early 20th century) .

  • Soil: Devonian slate, which provides the characteristic minerality and fine fruit.

  • Location:The parcel is located in the upper, central area of the steep slope and is considered the best position within the Ohligsberg .

5. 2019 vintage

The 2019 vintage on the Moselle was characterised by extremely low yields, which led to an exceptional concentration of the wines.

Julian Haart described the harvest as follows:

"I knew our 2019 yields would be much lower, but I have to admit I was shocked when I only received 250 litres after pressing - and from the same vines as in 2018, when it was 700 litres."

The harvest for the Ohligsberg Kabinett took place in just two daysimmediately after the Goldtröpfchen harvest. The entire vintage is characterised by high extract levels while retaining freshness .

6. Critics' ratings

The 2019 Ohligsberg Kabinett received excellent reviews and is considered one of the best wines of its vintage.

  • Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com):

"Full of smoke and wild herbs, this is so succulent, but even more vibrant, with an unbelievably long and intense, crystalline finish for this "light" wine category. Drink or hold."
Rating: 98 points - highest-rated Kabinett of the vintage .

  • Mosel Fine Wines:

*"The 2019 Ohligsberg Kabinett [...] was pressed with an old basket press, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (40-45 g/l). It offers a superbly ripe and flowery nose of pear, anise, herbs, pineapple, and almond cream. The wine proves gorgeously juicy on the slightly sweet palate but leaves a stunningly intense feel of zesty flavours of citrusy fruits in the hugely long and gorgeously complex finish. This is a stunning Kabinett in the making!"*
    Rating: 95 points - Drinking window: 2029-2044 .

  • CellarTracker (Community):
A user described the wine in June 2020 (still very young) with 97 points and predicted:

*"Still painfully young, but you can feel the amazing potential. So much extract, such wonderful mixture of pure fruit, mineral notes and herbs. Long and very fine. Needs 5+ years to fully integrate all of its components, but then it will be one of the best Kabinetts of the 2019 vintage. "*

7. Sensory description (according to critics)

  • Nose: Ripe and floral aromas of pear, aniseed, herbs, pineapple, almond cream, smoke and wild herbs .

  • Palate: Juicy with a slight sweetness (approx. 40-45 g/l residual sweetness), creamy texture with enormous extract fullness, paired with vibrant, precise acidity .

  • Finish: Crystalline, exceptionally long and intense with citrus fruit flavours .

8. Summary & drinking recommendation

The Julian Haart Wintricher Ohligsberg Riesling Kabinett 'Alte Reben' 2019is a rare and highly sought-after wine. It comes from the first parcel that Julian Haart acquired and is planted with vines over 100 years old. Due to the extremely low yields (250 litres from a plot that would otherwise yield 700 litres), the result is a concentrated, almost late-harvest Kabinett with great mineral density.

  • Drinking age: The wine is still very young. The ideal drinking window begins in 2029 at the earliest and extends to 2044 . Currently (2026), the wine should be decanted or aerated for several hours to develop its full potential.

  • Serving recommendation: Serve chilled at 9-10 °C . Ideal with Asian cuisine, spicy dishes or as a soloist due to the fruit sugar.

  • Availability:Due to its cult status, rarity and outstanding reviews (98 points), this wine is extremely difficult to obtain. The prices are in the top segment for German Kabinett wines .
