Château Doisy-Védrines – A gem from Barsac

Château Doisy-Védrines is one of the most traditional and renowned estates in the Barsac appellation, in the heart of Sauternes. With 27 hectares of vineyards in a single contiguous plot, it is the largest of the three estates that emerged from the historic division of the original Doisy estate. The château is situated in the immediate vicinity of the Premier Cru estates Climens and Coutet – a location that underscores its outstanding quality.

The estate’s history can be traced back to the 17th century, when Jean Raymond acquired a property called ‘Doisic’ in February 1677. On 5 June 1704, the Védrines family came to own the estate through the marriage of Jean-Baptiste Védrines to Marie Raymond. The domaine owes its name to the Knights of Védrines, who were its historic owners until the mid-19th century. Since 1842, the Château has been owned by the Castéja family – one of Bordeaux’s most distinguished winemaking dynasties. Following the death of the legendary Pierre Castéja, his son Olivier took over the management and now runs the estate together with his son-in-law, Guillaume Lefebvre.

The terroir of Doisy-Védrines is unique: the vineyards are situated on the crest of the Haut-Barsac on a limestone plateau containing fossilised asterias, covered with loamy-calcareous soils and fine gravel. The vines, which have an average age of 35 years, are 85 per cent Sémillon, supplemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The botrytised grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and rigorously selected.

The wines from Doisy-Védrines display a radiant golden-yellow colour and combine aromas of mirabelle plums, apricots and honey with a delicate peppery botrytis note. On the palate, they captivate with a vigorous, fresh acidity, a full body and excellent ageing potential. Since 2019, the estate has been HVE-3 certified, setting an example for sustainable viticulture.
