Trier Cathedral – A tradition of winegrowing since 1851
The Trier Cathedral is one of the three founding partners of the Trier Episcopal Vineyards and looks back on over 170 years of its own wine-growing tradition. Its history is inextricably linked to the ecclesiastical wine-growing culture along the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer, which dates back to the Middle Ages.
The High Cathedral Church was founded in 1851 as an independent winery and is thus the youngest of the three ecclesiastical institutions that merged in 1966 to form the Trier Episcopal Wineries . Together with the Episcopal Seminary (founded in 1773) and the Episcopal Boarding School (founded in 1840), it forms the foundation of one of Germany’s most significant wineries. All three partners were among the founding members of the Association of Natural Wine Auctioneers, now known as the VDP .
The vineyards of the Hohe Domkirche cover 22 hectares, of which around six hectares are the famous single vineyard Scharzhofberger on the Saar . This site is regarded as one of Germany’s most legendary vineyard sites and imparts to the wines their characteristic mineral character and remarkable ageing potential. All grapes harvested on the Saar are pressed at the Alter Scharzhof in Wiltingen .
The Trier Episcopal Vineyards cultivate a total of over 130 hectares of vineyards, spread across 145 plots in the river valleys of the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer . The focus of cultivation is clearly on the Riesling grape variety, accounting for around 88 to 90 per cent, supplemented by red and white Burgundy varieties . Among the most renowned vineyards are the Scharzhofberger, the Kanzemer Altenberg, the Ayler Kupp, the Kaseler Nies’chen and the Trittenheimer Apotheke .
Wine-making follows a philosophy that combines traditional techniques with modern precision. Around 40 per cent of the wines are matured in traditional 1,000-litre oak casks, which lend the wines structure and longevity . The cellars in the centre of Trier cover around 30,000 square metres, and parts of them can be traced back as far as the year 600 . Since 2020, Julia Lübcke has been at the helm of the estate as estate director, pursuing a consistent sustainability strategy .
