Highland Park Whisky – The Orkneys’ proud whisky tradition

On the wind-swept Orkney Islands, where the North Atlantic and the North Sea clash in an eternal, foaming struggle and the winds sweep ceaselessly across the barren, green landscape, stands a distillery that seems to have been carved into the rock like an ancient Viking fortress – Highland Park. Its name pays homage to the most famous son of these islands, the Viking jarl Magnus Erlendsson, whose influence still shapes the rugged soul of this whisky today.

The distillery’s history began in 1798 as an illicit still, hidden from the hated tax collectors of the British Kingdom. It was not until 1826 that Magnus Eunson, the founder, officially received the licence and laid the foundation stone for a distillery that has since remained continuously in the hands of his successors. To this day, the barley for the entire production is grown in the island’s fertile fields – a rare luxury that few distilleries can claim.

Yet the secret of Highland Park lies not solely in the craftsmanship, but in the magic of Orkney peat. This peat, interlaced with the mineral deposits and salty notes of the millennia-old seabed, is unlike any other. When drying the barley, it releases not a medicinal iodine scent, but a smoky aroma of sweet heather, wild thyme and a subtle hint of seaweed and shellfish. It is the scent of the island, captured in a single, quiet flame.

The copper stills, still crafted in the traditional style, complete the process. The spirit is oily, heavy and of remarkable depth. In the dark, damp warehouses, situated so close to the sea that the spray from the waves brushes against their walls, the whisky matures in the finest casks – ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and, occasionally, rum casks, which lend the distillate their sweet, spicy notes. The crowning glory of this patience is the whisky’s unmistakable character: aromas of delicate peaty smoke, ripe oranges, the sweetness of heather honey and a subtle, mineral saltiness reminiscent of the salty breeze of the North Sea. A hint of cinnamon and cloves rounds off the tasting experience, which reveals an almost endless finish on the palate.

Highland Park is more than just a whisky – it is the living poem of an island, the untamed spirit of the rugged north, which captures in every bottle the eternal struggle between wind and stone, fire and water, past and present. A drop of wild, unforgettable beauty.
