Château Gazin: A Pomerol with character and history
Château Gazin is one of the most historic and prestigious estates in the Pomerol appellation. The estate’s origins date back to the 12th century, when Knights of the Order of St John built a hostel here for pilgrims travelling along the Way of St James. Since 1917, the château has been owned by the De Bailliencourt dit Courcol family, who have managed the estate for five generations.
At the heart of the estate lies a 26-hectare contiguous vineyard on the upper terrace of the Pomerol plateau. The terroir consists of Günz gravel over blue and green clay with iron oxide inclusions. These soils offer excellent drainage and force the vines to put down deep roots, which lends the wine complexity and minerality. The vines, which have an average age of 35 years, are predominantly planted with Merlot (approx. 90 per cent), supplemented by small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Wine-making follows traditional methods: after careful hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fruit aromas. The wine is then aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, around half of which are new.
The 2011 vintage is a powerful, traditional Pomerol. Robert Parker described it as ‘powerful, virile’, with a deep ruby colour, a full-bodied texture and notes of coffee, black cherry liqueur and spices. Falstaff awarded it 91 points and highlighted aromas of dark berry fruit, delicate herbal spice, tobacco and mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with silky tannins and a long, spicy finish.
Depending on the source, the drinking window is given as roughly 2017 to 2030. The Château Gazin 2011 is therefore currently at a wonderful stage for drinking and can still be cellared for a few more years.
