Château Ducru-Beaucaillou – The elegant giant of Saint-Julien

In the heart of the Médoc, where the mighty Gironde stretches its salty arms far inland and the gravelly hills of Saint-Julien rise like a stone amphitheatre towards the sun, stands one of the finest estates of the Bordelais – Château Ducru-Beaucaillou.

The history of this estate begins in the 17th century, when the Bergeron family laid the foundations for a legacy that would endure for generations. In 1795, Bertrand Ducru acquired the estate and gave it his name, whilst the name ‘Beaucaillou’ – ‘beautiful pebble’ – refers to the unique terroir: a mosaic of deep gravelly soils deposited by the Garonne over millennia . In the famous 1855 classification, Ducru-Beaucaillou was rankedas a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé – an honour that continues to underpin the wine’s excellent reputation to this day.

At the heart of this poetry lies the unique terroir of the plots, which rise directly on the banks of the Gironde. The proximity to the river tempers the microclimate, whilst the deep gravel soils lend the vines remarkable vigour and, at the same time, a delicate minerality. Across around 75 hectares of vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – in roughly equal proportions – unfold their timeless interplay. The Cabernet lends the wine its architectural rigour and the distinctive aromas of blackcurrant and cedarwood, whilst the Merlot bestows upon it richness, suppleness and an alluring fruitiness of ripe cherries and plums.

In the cellar, the quiet magic is perfected. The grapes are rigorously selected and vinified before the wine matures for 18 months in new oak barrels, which lend it its distinctive depth and complexity. The famous ‘Croix de Beaucaillou’ – the estate’s second wine – is an approachable, powerful companion, whilst the Grand Vin is a symphony of elegance and power that delights the palate with aromas of black fruits, delicate spices, graphite and a hint of violets.
