Ziegler Distillery – The art of distillation from the Mainviereck region
The Ziegler Distillery in Freudenberg am Main is one of the most renowned and time-honoured distilleries in Germany. It was founded in 1865 by Hans Josef Ziegler. He made use of an old special privilege that allowed his parents’ farm to distil spirits, enabling him to turn his passion for fine spirits into a career. What began as a brewery with distilling rights has, over more than 150 years, developed into a family business now run by the fourth generation.
The distillery has always produced its spirits at its original site in Freudenberg am Main. Here in the ‘Mainviereck’ region, at the tri-border area of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Bavaria, products are crafted with great dedication that delight top international restaurateurs and connoisseurs alike. The range includes fine brandies, spirits, liqueurs and, for the past few years, whisky and aperitifs as well. Ziegler is renowned for its high standards of quality and artisanal production.
Over the years, the company has gained a legendary reputation and firmly established itself in the German world of finedining. In particular, the cherry schnapps in its unusual square bottle has become a trademark. The recipe for ‘Alte Zwetschge’, which is aged for up to five years in chestnut and oak barrels, and the wild forest raspberry from Lake Balaton are just two examples of the brand’s creative diversity. Many of these creations regularly receive top ratings, such as the Ziegler Schlehe with 95 Falstaff points or the wild raspberry spirit.
In the early 1990s, the distillery became part of the distribution company Hawesko, for which it was the sole producer for thirty years. Since 2021, Ziegler has once again been an independent company. With a new distribution partnership set to begin in 2025, the brand aims to further expand its leadership in the premium segment. Ziegler remains a shining example of the successful combination of over 150 years of tradition and a tireless pursuit of perfection.
