Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Winery – A beacon of German wine culture

The Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Winery in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße is one of Germany’s most traditional and significant wine-growing estates. Its history dates back to 1597, when Bernhard Bürklin – then mayor of Wachenheim – laid the foundations. The estate acquired its current name in 1875 following the marriage of Dr Albert Bürklin to Luise Wolf, the daughter of a Wachenheim winegrowing family. Since 1990, Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, Dr Albert Bürklin’s eldest daughter, has been running the winery with a clear and ambitious vision.

With 86 hectares of vineyards, Dr Bürklin-Wolf is one of Germany’s largest privately run wine-growing estates. The vineyards are spread across 15 different single-vineyard sites in the municipalities of Forst, Wachenheim, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg – all of which are prime locations in the Palatinate. The Ruppertsberger Gaisböhl monopole vineyard enjoys particular renown; covering 7.6 hectares, it is wholly owned by the estate. The name derives from a former goat pasture, and as early as the Royal Bavarian vineyard classification of 1828, the Gaisböhl was regarded as a top site. The red sandstone soils lend the wines tremendous body and a fine acidity.

Under the leadership of Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, the winery has become a pioneer of top-tier German viticulture. As early as 1994 – long before the VDP – she introduced a classification of vineyards modelled on the Burgundian system and divided the range into four tiers: Estate wines, local wines, Premier Crus (P.C.) and Grand Crus (G.C.). This bold move made the diversity of the Palatinate’s terroirs tangibly apparent for the first time.

Another milestone followed in 2005: the complete transition to biodynamic viticulture, which earned the estate the prestigious Biodyvin certification as the first German winery to achieve this – a distinction also held by leading estates such as Domaine Leflaive and the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In the cellar, the focus is on traditional large wooden barrels from Austrian and German cooperages, in which the Rieslings undergo spontaneous fermentation and mature on the fine lees.
