The Dr. Bürklin-Wolf winery in Wachenheim an der Weinstraße is one of the Palatinate’s most traditional yet innovative wineries – a ‘pioneer of biodynamic viticulture’ in Germany.
History and Family
The estate’s history dates backto 1597, when its founder, Bernhard Bürklin, first cultivated vines. However, the estate came to hold its current significance from around 1875, when Albert Bürklin married Luise Wolf from the Wolf family of winegrowers – thereby giving the estate its present name.
Since 1990, the winery has been run by Bettina Bürklin-von Guradze, representing the fifth generation. Today, three generations of the family live and work under one roof. Steffen Brahner has been the managing director since 2008 , and Nicolla Libelli is the cellar master .
Vineyard area and sites
With a vineyard area of around 85 to 87 hectares, Dr. Bürklin-Wolf is one of the largest self-marketing wine-growing estates in the Palatinate and ranks among the largest producers of dry Riesling in Germany.
The estate cultivates 15 top vineyards, which are among the most prized Riesling sites in the world. These include Grand Cru vineyards such as Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten, Pechstein and Ungeheuer. The soils are diverse, ranging from basalt, limestone and gravel to sandstone.
Philosophy and Biodynamics
The estate sees itself as the steward of a heritage spanning over 400 years for future generations. For over a decade (according to other sources, since 2005), the entire vineyard has been cultivatedusing biodynamic methods. The estate is certified with the Biodyvin emblem.
The classification of the vineyard sites follows the Burgundian model, using a four-tier system – an innovation that the winery was one of the first in Germany to introduce in1994. The wines are described as ‘slow wines’ – they are “given all the time in the world to develop, with as little human intervention as possible, from the grape …”.
Grape varieties and wine style
The portfolio is clearly dominated by Riesling, which accounts for82 per cent of the vineyard area. In addition, Pinot Noir (6 per cent), Pinot Blanc (7 per cent) and other varieties are cultivated.
The wines are internationally sought-after, highly rated, world-class top Rieslings, characterised by elegance, balance and great ageing potential. Auslese wines dating back as far as 1900 are ageing in the estate’s cellar .
