Dr Hermann Winery – Tradition and Terroir on the Moselle

In the picturesque village of Erden, nestled amongst the steep slate slopes of the Middle Mosel, lies Dr. Hermann Winery – a name synonymous with uncompromising quality and deep roots in the region. The Hermann family’s roots date back several centuries, but the current winery was only established in 1967 following the division of the estate of the renowned Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben winery in Ürzig. Dr Christian Hermann, a doctor and the grandfather of the current managing director, laid the foundations back then for a winery that would soon make a name for itself for its excellent Rieslings.

Today, the winery is run by Christian Hermann,representing the third generation , who, together with his father Rudi Hermann, steers the fortunes of the estate. The vineyard now covers over 15 hectares, 95 per cent of which are planted with the noble Riesling grape variety – complemented by a small proportion of Pinot Noir. At the heart of the winery’s success lie its exceptional vineyard sites: over 90 per cent of the vineyards are situated on steep and very steep slopes, including the famous VDP classifications Ürziger Würzgarten, Erdener Treppchen and Erdener Prälat. The soils, consisting of blue-grey and red slate, red sandstone and red volcanic rock, lend the wines their unmistakable minerality and aromatic depth.

Christian Hermann’s philosophy is clear: terroir-driven wines that reflect their origins and are produced in harmony with nature. In particular, the noble sweet wines, such as Auslese and Beerenauslese from the finest vineyards, have earned a legendary reputation. However, the winery has also worked its way to the very top of the region in the dry wine sector in recent years.

This outstanding quality did not go unnoticed: in early January 2025, the Dr Hermann Winery was admitted to the prestigious Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP). For the first time in over 20 years, the admission was unanimous and without any abstentions – an extraordinary recognition by colleagues of the consistent excellence. With its newly built wine shop and the fascinating blend of centuries-old family tradition and a modern pioneering spirit, the Dr. Hermann Winery remains a shining star in the German wine world.
