Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey – The rising star of the Côte de Beaune

The Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet has, in just under two decades, developed from a promising newcomer into one of Burgundy’s most sought-after and highly rated estates. The foundation for this rapid rise was laid in 2001, when Pierre-Yves Colin, the eldest son of the renowned winemaker Marc Colin, founded his own négociant business together with his wife Caroline Morey. However, the Domaine was truly born in 2005, when, after the harvest, he left the family estate and took with him his own six-hectare share of the vineyards. These plots in Saint-Aubin and Chassagne-Montrachet formed the heart of his new, independent domaine.

Today, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey and his family cultivate a total of 13 hectares of vineyards, stretching across the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune – including Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault and Saint-Aubin. The portfolio includes numerous Premier Cru plots as well as five Grand Crus. Among the estate’s jewels are iconic sites such as Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets, covering 0.2 hectares, whose vines were planted as early as 1950, and Saint-Aubin En Remilly, with vines dating back to 1975. Some of the oldest vines even date back to 1900 and lend the wines a unique intensity and complexity.

Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey’s distinctive style is the result of an uncompromising philosophy centred on minimal intervention and the utmost precision. The wines are matured in larger 350-litre demi-muids, with around a third of the barrels being new oak. This, combined with a long ageing on the lees of up to 18 months, gives the Chardonnays their characteristic mineral depth and their remarkable vigour. Often characterised by reductive notes in their youth, they reveal incredible power and energy as they mature. To counteract the problem of premature oxidation, Pierre-Yves has refined his techniques: he has dispensed with batonnage, no longer heats the cellar and seals the bottles with wax over untreated corks.

The specialist press describes him as one of the ‘most outstanding winemakers of our time’. His wines are an absolute must for any lover of Burgundian white wines and a shining example of how tradition, craftsmanship and a tireless pursuit of perfection can take one to new heights.
