Domaine Trapet Père & Fils – A Burgundian heritage of international renown
Domaine Trapet Père & Fils ranks amongst the most significant and time-honoured estates in Burgundy. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin on the Côte de Nuits, this family-run estate combines a history stretching back over 150 years with an uncompromising commitment to quality.
The estate’s roots date back to 1870, when Louis Trapet planted his first vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin . The estate was officially founded in 1919 and developed into one of the region’s leading producers during the 20th century . Following the division of the original estate in 1993, the Rossignol-Trapet winery was established, whilst Jean-Louis Trapet took over Domaine Trapet Père & Fils . Since 1995, he has run the estate together with his wife Andrée, who hails from Alsace – a Franco-German connection that has also enabled the estate to acquire vineyards in Alsace .
The Burgundian estate’s vineyard area covers around 16 hectares, with Pinot Noir clearly dominating . Among the most prized holdings are the Grands Crus: Chambertin, covering 1.9 hectares – the oldest vines were planted in 1919 –, Latricières-Chambertin, covering 0.75 hectares, and Chapelle-Chambertin, covering 0.6 hectares . In addition, there are Premier Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin as well as plots in Marsannay, where Chardonnay is also grown .
Particularly noteworthy is the estate’s pioneering role in biodynamic viticulture. As early as 1997, the Domaine switched entirely to biodynamic methods and received both Biodyvin and Demeter certification . Jean-Louis Trapet was thus one of the pioneers of this movement in Burgundy. His philosophy: to support the vine, never to force it .
Wine-making follows Burgundian tradition. The proportion of whole-bunch vinification ranges between 30 and 100 per cent, depending on the vintage . Following cold maceration and a three- to four-week fermentation with natural yeasts, the wines mature for 15 to 18 months in oak barrels . The style of the wines is approachable yet profound – refined, intense and concentrated, whilst respecting the terroir .
For wine lovers, Domaine Trapet Père & Fils offers a rare opportunity to enjoy great Burgundian wines that uniquely combine tradition and innovation.
