Moyet – The quiet giant from the heart of the Charente

In the heart of the French Cognac region, in the town of Cognac itself, lies the House of Moyet – a name synonymous with artisanal perfection and remarkable continuity. It was founded in 1864 by Euthrope Moyet, an experienced winemaker and distiller who, at the age of nearly 40, had the courage to open his own cognac house . His son-in-law, André Tessier, immediately joined him on this venture. With an innovative approach, they quickly established their brand amongst the renowned cognac houses. As early as the end of the 19th century, they were exporting their fine spirits to Asia and the USA, making them pioneers of the international cognac trade.

However, the house’s history is also marked by tragedy: the First World War claimed the life of the young André Tessier, and in 1918 the founder, Euthrope Moyet, also died. Despite these blows of fate, his descendants carried on the legacy with tireless dedication. One of Moyet’s most remarkable features is the astonishing continuity of its cellar masters: since the house was founded, there have been only three Maîtres de Chai. The founder himself worked until 1918, whilst his apprentice shaped the house until 1978. This unbroken line of tradition gives Moyet a unique philosophy and an unmistakable style that upholds the highest traditional standards.

The company, based on Rue du Canton in Cognac, sources its grapes – predominantly the Ugni Blanc variety – from the region’s finest vineyards. Following the harvest comes double distillation in traditional copper stills – a crucial step in developing the aromatic complexity. The subsequent ageing in French oak casks gives the cognac its characteristic colour, complexity and the harmonious balance between fruit, wood and spicy notes. The range encompasses all the classic age categories from VS through VSOP to XO. Particularly noteworthy are the limited-edition bottlings and rare vintage cognacs, which demonstrate the exceptional skill of the master distillers.

Moyet is not a flashy star, but a quiet giant of the industry – a house whose cognacs are even served on board Scandinavian airlines . With its deep roots in the region, a family tradition spanning almost 160 years and an uncompromising philosophy of authenticity, Moyet remains the epitome of excellent, unadulterated cognac.
