Domaine Armand Rousseau – The pinnacle of Burgundian terroir

In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, where the ancient slopes of Gevrey-Chambertin gently slope towards the morning sun and the scent of Pinot Noir fills the crisp Burgundian air, stands a vineyard of quiet, almost regal grandeur – the Domaine Armand Rousseau. Founded in 1909 by Armand Rousseau, a man who came from a family of winegrowers and wine merchants, this estate began its journey with just a few inherited plots and a vision that was to change the region’s viticulture forever.

Armand Rousseau was a pioneer of his time. In the 1930s, when most Burgundian winegrowers were still selling their wines to the major merchants, he began bottling his wine himself and marketing it under his own name. He was one of the first to export his fine wines to the United States following the end of Prohibition – a bold move that laid the foundation for the house’s world-renowned reputation.

At the heart of this poetry lies the unique terroir of the Grand Crus that the estate calls its own. Across some 15 hectares of vineyards, over half of which are Grand Cru, the ancient Pinot Noir vines unfold their timeless magic – in selected plots, they are between 40 and 60 years old. The legendary vineyards of Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Ruchottes-Chambertin provide the precious raw material for wines of pure, graceful elegance. The iron-rich limestone of Gevrey-Chambertin lends them their architectural rigour and their unmistakable depth.

In the cellar, the quiet magic is perfected. Around 15 per cent of the stem clusters remain in the must to impart to the wine those fine tannins that make it so distinctive. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, before the wine matures for 18 to 20 months in barriques. The estate’s philosophy is one of uncompromising quality: old vines, carefully managed yields and a gentle, almost restrained winemaking process.

Today, the legacy is upheld by Charles, Eric and his daughter Cyrielle, representing the third and fourth generations. Domaine Armand Rousseau is more than just a winery – it is the undisputed king of Gevrey-Chambertin, a living poem of Pinot Noir, chalky soil and the unwavering dedication of a family that has been century has captured the soul of Burgundy in every bottle.
