The last guardian of Scotland’s rugged soul – Springbank

At the windswept tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, where the Firth of Clyde meets the open Atlantic and the salty breeze sweeps ceaselessly over the rooftops of Campbeltown, stands one of the last guardians of a bygone era: the Springbank Distillery. Once, this place was the whisky capital of the world, a labyrinth of smoking chimneys that was home to over thirty distilleries. Today, only three remain, and Springbank is the only one that has kept the fires burning continuously since its founding in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell.

More than just a business, Springbank is a living museum of craftsmanship. The Mitchell family, now in its seventh generation, cherishes a heritage that is rooted in every fibre of this place. Here, whisky isn’t simply produced – every step, from malting their own barley on the historic floors to labelling the bottle, is still carried out by hand and on the same site. The scent of germinating barley and the delicate, earthy smoke of peat, which comes from the nearby moors, permeates the air and blends with the salty hint of the sea, which, according to the distillers, inevitably seeps into the breathing casks.

At the heart of this poetry lies the whisky’s unique character. Springbank practises an enigmatic 2.5-fold distillation – a time-honoured secret that lends the distillate a remarkable oily viscosity and a heavy, maritime body . In the copper stills, which are still fired by a direct flame, a spirit of robust complexity is created – a balance of gentle peaty smoke and sweet, fruity notes that captivates connoisseurs around the world.

Yet Springbank has remained modest. Production is strictly controlled so as not to succumb to the temptation of mass production. In a world of sheer quantity, it is a rare gem, a whisper from another era. Every drop is a poem that tells of Campbeltown’s untamed soul, of salty winds, of peaty fire and of the unwavering dedication of a family that keeps the spirit of traditional craftsmanship alive.
