Château Rauzan-Gassies – The winged guardian of Margaux

There, where the deep gravel soils of the Garonne still whisper of ancient shells and the sun gently sweeps across the rooftops of Margaux-Cantenac, lies a vineyard that tells of a miracle. Château Rauzan-Gassies – its name evokes history, nobility and a secret once guarded by the birds of the Médoc.

The estate’s roots stretch back to 1661, when Pierre de Rauzan, the shrewd tenant of Château Margaux, acquired the feudal estate of Gassies . What he created was a vineyard of such perfection that it was soon surrounded by a marvellous rumour: when a devastating hailstorm ravaged the entire Margaux region, the vines of the Chevalier de Rauzan were miraculously spared. It was said that birds had spread their wings protectively over the grapes. To this day, a winged coat of arms adorns every bottle – a silent thank you to the feathered guardians.

In 1763, the inheritance divided the Domaine de Rauzan into two estates. This is how Château Rauzan-Gassies came into being – a kingdom of its own made up of vines, which, in the famous 1855 classification, was elevated to the rank of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé among the nobility of Bordeaux wines. Since 1946, the Quié family has safeguarded this precious legacy, now in the hands of siblings Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, who, with the patience of gardeners and the passion of artists, shape each vintage.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot thrive on 28 hectares of deep gravelly soils. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, soak up the light of the Garonne and the salty breeze from the nearby sea. In the cellar, the wines mature for twelve to eighteen months in oak barrels, until they reveal their full richness: violets, blackberries and blackcurrants, enveloped in the finest tannins – a classic Margaux with an elegant texture and velvety depth.

Château Rauzan-Gassies is more than just a wine – it is a legendary myth, which preserves in every bottle the song of the birds and the silence of the ancient gravel soils.
