Johannisberg Castle – The birthplace of Spätlese Riesling

High above the gentle slopes of the Rheingau, where the mighty river winds its silvery ribbon through the green hillside in majestic bends, stands a jewel of timeless elegance – Johannisberg Castle. Not merely a place, but a living monument to wine culture, which has been continuously inscribing the history of the Rheingau into every one of its wines since the year 1100. It is the oldest Riesling vineyard in the world, and its name echoes through the centuries like a noble promise.

The poetry of this estate reached its most wondrous moment in the autumn of 1775. A messenger, sent to deliver the abbot’s official permission to harvest, was delayed – whether by chance or by a higher power. By the time the long-awaited letter finally arrived, the grapes were already covered in noble rot, shrivelled and infinitely concentrated. Out of what appeared to be misfortune, heaven gave birth to the world’s first late-harvest wine – a liquid revelation of beguiling sweetness and profound complexity that henceforth transformed every standard of viticulture .

Across some 35 hectares of vineyard, dedicated solely to Riesling, the elements come together here. The warming rays of the sun are reflected in the weathered Taunus quartzite of the south-facing slope, whilst cool night breezes from the dense hinterland sweep across the vines. This mineral austerity combines with the fruit’s vigour to produce wines of unparalleled finesse, rigour and elegance. Ever since the famous Metternich family received the estate in 1816 as a token of gratitude for their diplomatic services, the tradition of ageing the great wines in century-old oak barrels has been upheld with the utmost seriousness. The famous seals – blue, red and the sublime yellow-gold – bear witness to a rigorous hierarchy of quality, at the very pinnacle of which the ‘Gelblack’ reigns as the undisputed king of the Rheingau.

A sip of this golden nectar is like travelling back in time: juicy peach and apricot flavours, a hint of exotic fruits and the deep, earthy minerality of the slate blend into a floating lightness that, even after decades of ageing, loses none of its youthful vigour. Schloss Johannisberg is more than just a vineyard – it is living proof that true greatness lies in the patience of waiting and in humility before nature. Every bottle preserves the light of the Rheingau sun, the song of the cicadas and the venerable whisper of a story that never ends.
