Domaine Georges Roumier: Perfection in Chambolle-Musigny

The Domaine Georges Roumier, situated in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny, ranks amongst the most legendary estates in Burgundy. The estate was founded in 1924, when Georges Roumier married Geneviève Quanquin and took over her family’s vineyards in the Bonnes-Mares and Musigny cru sites, as well as the Premier Cru ‘Les Amoureuses’. A decisive milestone came in 1945, when Roumier became one of the first winemakers in the region to begin bottling his wines himself at the domaine – a revolutionary departure at the time from the previously dominant merchant system.

This legacy is now being carried on into its third generation by Christophe Roumier, who has been at the helm of the estate since 1982 and, together with his sister Delphine, has taken it to the very top of the global wine scene. Today, the domaine cultivates around twelve hectares of vineyards, which rank among the most prized in the Côte de Nuits. The portfolio is breathtaking: In addition to the Grands Crus Bonnes-Mares, Musigny, Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin, the estate also includes the Premier Cru vineyards ‘Les Amoureuses’, ‘Les Combottes’ and the monopole vineyard ‘Clos de la Bussière’. The Musigny in particular, made from vines that are almost a century old, is of an almost mythical rarity and is considered one of the most sought-after wines in the world.

Christophe Roumier’s philosophy is one of uncompromising authenticity. In the vineyard, work is carried out with the utmost meticulousness and deep respect for the ecological balance. The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, whilst the proportion of new oak barrels remains subtle so as never to mask the radiant fruit.

The result is wines of almost painfully beautiful purity, possessing a unique texture – concentrated yet silky, permeated by a vibrant minerality. They are the perfect symbiosis of power and finesse and are today mentioned in the same breath as the greats of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or Leroy. Domaine Roumier is not just a winery – it epitomises the pure, unadulterated essence of Burgundian Pinot Noir.
