Château d’Yquem – The golden dream of Sauternes
In the misty dawn of south-western France, where the Garonne wraps its silvery arms around the rolling hills of Sauternes and the warm autumn sun weaves the last drops of dew into the vines, a vineyard of almost mythical stature stands enthroned – Château d’Yquem. For more than four centuries, this place has stood as the undisputed king of sweet wines, a living monument to dedication and patience, whose very name alone inspires awe and longing in the hearts of connoisseurs.
The history of the estate dates back to 1593, when Jacques de Sauvage laid the foundations for this legacy. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times, until it finally passed into the hands of the de Lur-Saluces family in 1785 through the marriage of Joséphine d’Yquem to Louis Amédée de Lur-Saluces, who cherished it with unwavering devotion for over two centuries. In 1999, the estate was sold to the luxury goods group LVMH, yet the spirit of Yquem remained unchanged.
The secret of this wine lies in a rare gift from nature: the noble rot fungus Botrytis cinerea, which settles on the grapes amidst the misty autumn mornings and the warm, sunny afternoons. This precious rot shrinks the berries, concentrating their sugar, acidity and aromas into a nectar of unforgettable depth. The harvest takes place in several stages by hand – every single berry is examined by the experienced eye of the winemaker and harvested only when it has reached the highest degree of noble rot. A single drop of this wine is the result of up to five grapes, and a glass encapsulates the work of an entire day.
The wine is then aged for three and a half years in new oak barrels, to allow it to reach its full potential. On the nose, a bouquet of apricots, honey, orange blossom and a hint of saffron unfolds – a fragrance that takes the palate on a journey through time. On the palate, the wine displays an almost weightless elegance, a balance of beguiling sweetness and a vibrant acidity that, even after centuries of ageing, loses none of its vitality. Château d’Yquem is the epitome of noble sweet wine, a liquid poetry that captures nature’s infinite patience, the dedication of the winegrowers and the soul of Sauternes in every bottle – a golden dream that lives on forever in the memory.
