The origins of the estate, originally known simply as "Rabaud", date back to 1660, when it came into the possession of the de Cazeau family through marriage. The decisive turning point came in 1903, when the estate was divided and Adrien Promis acquired the largest part, giving rise to today's Château Rabaud-Promis.
The estate was labelled "Premier Cru Classé " (First Growth) inthe official Bordeaux classification of 1855, making it one of the most renowned sweet wine producers in the world. From 1950 onwards, the estate was run by the Déjean family for seven decades .In 2020, it became the property of the Taillan Group (Merlaut family), which ushered in a new era for the traditional winery.
🌿 Viticulture & terroir
The 33 hectares of vineyards at Château Rabaud-Promis are located in the commune of Bommes, in the heart of the Sauternes.The terroir consists of gravelly clay soil on the slopes of the Garonne and Ciron valleys and is ideal for the production of Sauternes.
The specific microclimate, characterised by cool morning mists from the river Ciron that meet the warmer afternoon air of the Garonne, is the perfect breeding ground for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). This is the basis for the unique sweet wines of the region.
The planting follows the classic cuvée of the appellation:
🍷 The wines
The centrepiece of the winery is the noble sweet Grand Vin Château Rabaud-Promis.
It is only produced in years with perfect conditions for botrytis.
The wines are known for their complex aromas of dried apricots, honey and spicy notes.
They have considerable ageing potential.
Additional information:
A touch of elegance is emphasised by the connection to beekeeping on the estate; a golden bee adorns the wine's label.
