Legras & Haas – The Art of Independence in Champagne

In the tranquil village of Chouilly, the northernmost Grand Cru village on the famous Côte des Blancs, lies the Legras & Haas Champagne house. It is a house that, like no other, stands for independence, craftsmanship and the courage to go its own way. It was founded in 1991 by François Legras and Brigitte Haas. François, born in Chouilly in 1937, is the heir to a winemaking tradition stretching back more than 400 years. Brigitte, on the other hand, moved from Alsace to Champagne in the 1960s, worked as a multilingual assistant and acquired her first plot of land in Épernay in 1974. Their different backgrounds – deep-rooted heritage on the one hand, a spirit of discovery on the other – became the driving force behind their joint project. Today, the family business is run by the second generation: the three sons, Rémi, Olivier and Jérôme.

The terroir of Legras & Haas is exceptional. The family cultivates a total of 18 hectares in Chouilly, all of which are planted exclusively with Chardonnay. In addition, there are 12 hectares on the Coteaux Vitryat near Vitry-le-François, one of the finest Chardonnay terroirs in Champagne, as well as further plots in Les Riceys, Aÿ and Leuvrigny. The soils in Chouilly consist of belemnite chalk and older deposits, which can absorb up to 40 per cent of their volume in water and thus ensure constant moisture for the vines. The result is wines that are approachable early on, with lush aromas and excellent ageing potential.

The estate’s philosophy is uncompromising: authenticity, independence and a deep respect for nature characterise every stage of the process. The family is not guided by trends, but solely by its own vision of quality. The signature cuvée, Intuition, is the perfect example of this: A balancing act of creativity, in which Chardonnay provides finesse, Pinot Meunier richness and Pinot Noir structure. With L’Évidence Grand Cru, the house underlines its reputation as a specialist in exceptional Blanc de Blancs. Limited-edition cuvées such as the Cuvée π , drawn from a permanent reserve of the finest Chouilly Chardonnays, bear witness to the creative freedom and the brothers’ tireless pursuit of perfection. Legras & Haas is not a flashy star, but a quiet hero of Champagne – a house that, with quiet conviction and great artistry, creates wines of timeless elegance.
