Glenfarclas – In the valley of green grass, the spirit of independence matures
The Glenfarclas distillery is nestled in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, just five miles south of Aberlour. Its name is derived from Gaelic and translates roughly as ‘Valley of the Green Grasslands’. The distillery was officially founded in 1836 by Robert Hay, having presumably been operated as an illicit farm distillery prior to that. The official distilling licence was granted in 1844.
A decisive turning point in its history came in 1865, when the cattle farmer John Grant acquired the distillery for the sum of 511 pounds . Since then, Glenfarclas has been inextricably linked to the Grant family, who are now running the business in its fifth and sixth generations . This unbroken family tradition, spanning almost 160 years, is a rare exception in the Scottish whisky industry and is aptly characterised by the company motto ‘The Spirit of Independence’ .
A defining feature of Glenfarclas’s distinctive style is the almost exclusive maturation of the whisky in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. For these casks, the Grant family maintains a close partnership with a bodega in Spain. Production itself is carried out using traditional methods: the six stills are still heated by an open flame, and the water required comes from springs in the nearby Ben Rinnes mountains.
Glenfarclas’ core range comprises a wide spectrum of age statements, from 10-year-old to 40-year-old bottlings. Particularly noteworthy, however, is the distillery’s ability to also offer exceptionally old whiskies such as the 50- or even 70-year-old vintages . This is made possible by its enormous storage capacity; well over 100,000 casks are currently maturing in its 38 warehouses. Glenfarclas offers visitors a variety of guided tours, including a one-and-a-half-hour Classic Tour, which provides an in-depth insight into the time-honoured art of whisky-making.
