Domaine Leroy: A Burgundian legend
The Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée is one of Burgundy’s most exceptional wineries. Its roots date back to 1868, when François Leroy founded the trading house Maison Leroy in Auxey-Duresses. His grandson Henri led the company to world fame and acquired a half-share in the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) in 1942. His daughter, Lalou Bize-Leroy, one of the most prominent figures in Burgundian winemaking, took over the management of the DRC in 1974. Following her separation in 1992, she devoted herself entirely to her own domaine, which she had founded as early as 1988.
In that year, Lalou Bize-Leroy acquired the run-down vineyard of Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée and established Domaine Leroy. Later, plots from Domaine Philippe Rémy in Gevrey-Chambertin were added. The vineyard now covers around 22 hectares, including 9 Grands Crus and 8 Premiers Crus in Burgundy’s most prestigious sites – from Musigny and Richebourg, through Clos de Vougeot, to Chambertin and Corton-Charlemagne.
Since 1989, the entire vineyard has been managed according to the strict rules of biodynamic agriculture. Lalou Bize-Leroy, a passionate advocate of terroir, has the vines pruned extremely low and the yield reduced to just four grapes per vine. This results in maximum concentration of the aromas. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand and sorted twice before being completely destemmed.
In the cellar, the domaine relies on traditional craftsmanship: fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, after which the Grands Crus are aged for 18 months in new French oak barriques. Filtration and fining are deliberately avoided in order to preserve the natural complexity and texture of the wines. The result is Pinot Noirs of breathtaking depth, unparalleled longevity and a palette of aromas that is second to none: notes of dark cherries, roses, truffles, leather, smoke and the finest spices blend to create an unforgettable taste experience.
